Spring Cleanups – Get Rid of That Post-Winter Mess!

If there’s one thing I can’t stand, it’s the post-Winter mess I find in my yard in every year. I get excited with the warmer weather, but the sticks and leaves covering the ground always put a damper on the coming Spring. Everything is always a little messy around my house in March (inside and out), and I know I’m far from the only person who goes through this every year. That’s why having Spring cleanups done by a professional landscaping crew is common around the neighborhood every year as we get into springtime. I have enough spring cleaning to do inside the house so it’s just easier to have someone spruce it up on the outside and our very own Greenstreet crews do a great job every year!

What is a Spring Cleanup?

A typical “Spring cleanup” is pretty straight forward. Our crew will start with leaves and sticks scattered around the yard. They’ll gather and bag all the loose debris and load it into their trucks (it wouldn’t do much good if they just dumped it somewhere else on your property). Then they begin to inspect the plants around your house. They’ll check them for disease or stress and diagnose them. If they are in good shape, they can give them a simple pruning and move on but sometimes a little more is required. If the plant is placed poorly and isn’t receiving the proper level of sunlight, it can be moved elsewhere. If the plant is sick and can’t be saved, they can offer potential replacements, which would be done down the road. The idea is to just get the yard cleaned up and looking nice for the coming good times and sunny days that Spring always brings.

The next step to Spring cleanups is to give some love to the mulch beds. Typically, the beds are pretty straightforward. First, any wayward weeds will be pulled out and tossed in the truck with everything else. Next, the edges of the beds usually must be redone. They get a little unkempt during the winter months, so they’ll most likely need some attention. The edges are as easy as someone going around and straightening them out with a shovel. After that is said and done, a top dressing of mulch will get things in proper shape.

Finally, the plants will need some pruning. The months of unchecked growth and damage are not a good look for your yard you want beautified. Most of the plants in your yard will have some Winter damage to them. Whether a heavy snowfall broke some branches or some of your perennials didn’t handle the cold as well as you hoped, they’re bound to need some kind of pruning. While removing a dead or dying branch might not be the most aesthetically pleasing, it can save the plants’ life down the road so it’s important to bite the bullet and get them shaped up. They will grow back! Trimming and pruning is good for your beloved plants and will help them maintain their health and appearance. Our crews follow a general rule of removing about 1/3 of the length of the branch they are trimming. This varies from plant to plant, but this ensures room for new and healthy growth.

With this, our crew will probably be about done. Every yard has its own special needs and requirements for a job well done, but this covers just about everything we would run into during typical Spring cleanups. A freshly cleaned yard to go along with the warmer days is such a nice feeling every year and a great way to start off the upcoming season right.
