Pumpkins are beautiful gifts of autumn that we only get to enjoy this time of year. Besides making pies and carving them into Jack-o-lanterns, we can also admire their beauty on the front porch and in landscape displays. Here are designs and ideas to bring the magic of a pumpkin patch right to your home!
A Farmhouse Display
There’s nothing like a pumpkin farm to bring us into the spirit of fall. You can bring that festive warmth to your yard with straw bales, antique lanterns, planters in milking pails, and—of course—pumpkins. Set up an old pitchfork, hang a straw hat near the door, and you’ll be well on your way to a cozy farmhouse design.
Carved Pumpkins
A ghostly face is not the only way to carve a pumpkin. If you want to try something different, get the kids together and try carving silhouettes of owls, oak leaves, other birds, trees, and animals, and even messages into your pumpkins. You’ll make a display that’s apt for Halloween but still appropriate before and after October 31st.
Painted Pumpkins with Messages
Pumpkins already speak volumes by reminding us of the fall harvest and Halloween season, but you can always add a unique style to these vegetables by painting them. Go for solid colors, stripes, or a color design to match your fall flowers. You can paint other messages on them too, like “Welcome,” “Trick or Treat,” “Love,” or “Happy Harvest.” There’s nothing like a cheerful pumpkin to welcome your friends to your front door.
A Harvest Display
As much as we love Halloween, not every pumpkin display has to be spooky. Pumpkins are also good symbols of the abundant fall harvest. Set up pumpkins, squash, and gourds of different shapes and sizes alongside a lavish fall planter or a cornucopia overflowing with colorful leaves, pine cones, dry grass, apples, and other symbols of fall bounty.
Stacked Pumpkin Topiaries
If you want a unique design for a display, try stacking 3-5 flat pumpkins in a short tower. You can use the same variety for a uniform look or find different varieties of pumpkins for a more eccentric style. You’ll have to cut the stems off the bottom and middle pumpkins so that they stack well; use your gardening shears carefully! For extra stability, you can drill holes and secure them with a dowel running from the ground into the base of the top pumpkin.
The Pumpkin Planter
Turn your pumpkins into planters by placing beautiful fall flowers inside them, like asters and chrysanthemums. The trick is to hollow them out and place a pot inside of them rather than putting the soil right into the pumpkin, although you can do it that way too. You can also place pots of fall blooms into carved pumpkins if you want to give your Jack-o-lantern a cool hairdo.
A Wheelbarrow Full of Pumpkins
Nothing says abundance like an overflowing display. In the fall, pumpkins are the perfect option to symbolize a plentiful harvest. You can set up a wheelbarrow with a bunch of pumpkins in and around it to create that look. As a trick, place a blanket or some straw in the bottom of the barrel to support your pumpkins on display.
A Cozy Pumpkin Display
Make your pumpkins comfortable by setting them up with a blanket, a rocking chair, some colorful throw pillows, and even a coffee mug or two. This display evokes the comfort of cozying up indoors as the weather cools in the fall.
