Plant Shopping: Why Quality Matters

The success of your garden starts by selecting healthy plants from your local garden center. Choosing strong, vigorous plants is one of the best ways to give you an advantage. They establish more quickly, bloom or produce fruit sooner, and require less maintenance in the short and long term. It pays to know what a healthy plant looks like!

Healthy Foliage:

Healthy plants often have lots of new growth. The leaves should be a bright or full green color unless they are bi-colored or variegated.  Many minor issues can lead to leaf discoloration and damage that are not causes for concern over long-term health of plants. Yellowing edges or yellow patches between leaf veins may indicate stress from a small pot or insufficient nutrients. Brown edges may result from a shade plant placed in full sun. leaves may get holes or tears from transportation. In addition to leaf blemishes that may be normal for the time of year or sun exposure there are also lots of odd and unique plant varieties with unusual leaves. Checking the leaves is especially important for vegetables and annuals, as any stressed plant may spend valuable time recovering in your garden rather than producing or blooming. But it is completely normal for most trees and shrubs to have some leaf discoloration by mid or late summer, and in most cases, will not affect the long-term health of the plant

Full Growth Habit:

Look for plants with a full, bushy growth habit. For annuals, herbs and veggies, avoid long, leggy types that have been straining for light or space. They may flop in your garden, form fewer buds, and struggle to regain a proper shape. Choosing a sturdy and compact form is one of the essential ways to ensure success. Some perennials, trees, shrubs, and even some annuals are supposed to be tall and narrow, so if in doubt, ask or check the tag for height and width info.

Free of Pests and Disease:

Check for signs of common pests like aphids, spider mites, scale, and mealybugs.
The best ways are to examine the underside of leaves, where bugs usually congregate, and any place where leaves attach to stems. Ensure the vegetation is pest-free and does not have any unusual spots, webbing, mushy areas, or unusual discoloration.

Healthy Roots:

Check for robust roots. If a plant lifts out of the soil too easily, it may be weak below ground, or it may have been recently potted and still needs time to become garden-worthy. Pot-bound roots are actually a good sign. When they mold to the shape of the container, they ship better. Plus, a bigger root system means bigger growth once you move it into the ground or a larger pot. Plants with small or shallow root systems are at higher risk of stress from both over and under watering, so if you are interested in a plant that may not be fully rooted into it’s pot, careful watering will be essential to care for it. This is another good reason to speak with an expert regarding proper care.

Intact Stems:

Check that the stems are free of scars or cracks, especially with thick or woody stems. Damaged stems can weaken growth and stem strength. Scrapes on stems often heal, but splits and cracks from narrow branch angles may not.

Free Of Weeds And Suckers:

You certainly don’t want to introduce new weeds into your garden, so check pots before bringing them home. Suckers from grafts and roots should also be checked and removed before planting. Staff at the store should be able to assist with this essential maintenance. The presence of a few weeds or suckers can be normal for fast growing plants in a nursery, but if left too long, may take resources away from the plant that it needs for healthy growth.

Shopping For Discounts:

Promotional sales and discount sections at garden centers often feature plants that may be healthy but are past blooming or plants have leaf or branch damage. If you are looking to score some deals, keep all the previously mentioned principles in mind. Some damage is temporary and some may indicate a problem not worth the trouble. Any nursery should have staff that are able to answer why a plant is at a reduced price and how that impacts the health of the plant. Many winter-hardy perennials and shrubs may not even have leaves in fall and winter, so ask questions of staff like “how do I know if this is alive.” An employee should demonstrate how to check the roots and stems.

High-Quality Nursery:

Scan the entire nursery before you make a purchase and ensure that the majority of the plants are healthy and well-cared for. Wilting or disease in one section may indicate that an area was lacking proper care. Look for lush leaves, compact habits, disease-free foliage, and strong roots throughout the whole greenhouse and nursery lot.
