Spring Gardening at Greenstreet Gardens

spring gardening - Greenstreet Gardens

It’s Spring! Time to get active outside in your gardens. Where should you start? There are a few things you can do right away and a few things that you can plan to do as the temperature warms up. Greenstreet Gardens is here to help. Our motto is Success Grows Here! We stock many of the plants and products that will ensure you have success getting the tasks on your Spring Checklist completed with ease.

To get started If you want to grow some of your own vegetables or flowers, it’s time to plant your seeds indoors. Greenstreet has Jump Start Germination Stations with heat mats that create the perfect environment to get plants started. Or use our grow lights like the Miracle LED lamp placed over Jiffy’s Greenhouse Kits or Jiffy Pots in trays. Use Espoma Organic seed starter soil which is specifically intended for starting seeds in jiffy pots or peat pots. Grow lights provide artificial lighting to germinate seeds so they will be ready to be planted outside, once the danger of frost is over in early May. We also carry Bonide Rooting Powder if you want to propagate other plants you already have.

Next, it’s time to work on your garden beds. Add soil amendments to your gardens before you start planting outside. We recommend soil amendments which improve your existing soil, such as Coast of Maine Bumper Crop, Coast of Maine Lobster Compost, and locally produced Leaf Gro. Also, we have other excellent products like Quail Ridge Mushroom Compost, Quail Ridge Garden Gro Compost, Frey Brothers Cow Manure, Freestate Farms Grow Good Compost, and Espoma Cow Manure Compost. Be sure while prepping your beds to spread Preen Garden pre-emergent weed preventer before adding the mulch layer. If you create new garden beds for planting in the ground, we can supply you with Espoma Organic Garden Soil, Norfleet Super Fine Soil Conditioner, or Garden Pro Topsoil.

It might also be time to deter any wildlife that you suspect of trying to turn your gardens into their personal salad bar! Greenstreet regularly stocks a solid line of animal deterrent products like Deer Scram, Molemax Repels All, Molemax Slug Kill, and Molemax Mosquito Beater. Get ahead of the wildlife NOW, before it becomes a problem in your gardens.

Spring is also the perfect time to add nutrients and organic plant foods to your new and existing plants. Our shelves are lined with Espoma and True Organic Tone products: like Bio-tone, Plant-tone, Holly-tone, Bulb-tone, Rose-tone, Berry-tone, Tree-tone, Iron-tone, Tomato-tone, Garden-tone, and Flower-tone for you to use.  We stock Espoma Soil Acidifier, Garden Lime, Garden Gypsum, Blood Meal, Bone Meal, and Kelp Meal. In addition, we carry fertilizers such as FOOP Garden Organic Liquid Fertilizer to apply to soil, FOOP Mist Fertilizer Folia feed to apply to foliage, Neptune Harvest Fish Fertilizer, Seamate Liquid fertilizer, and Osmocote which is a slow-release fertilizer that can be used on many types of plants.

Once your beds have been amended and prepped, it’s time to plant biennials or perennials like Pansies, Violas, Candy Tuft, Ranunculus, Primrose, Creeping Jenny, Creeping Phlox, Columbine, Hellebores, and Dianthus. Find a spot for a beautiful Spring blooming Camellia, Azalea, Rhododendron, Paperbush, and/or Forsythia bush. Remember if you are purchasing plants that have been inside of our greenhouses, the plants will need to be gradually hardened off to protect them from a late spring frost.

Maybe you’d like to create some Springtime pots with some of the plants listed above for your patio or deck. Or it could be time to add some of our lovely new house plants to your inside space. Either way, we carry a large variety of beautiful Harvest Garden Pottery. We have plenty of Potting Mixes to use, such as Coast of Maine Gardener’s Gold, PittMoss Potting Mix, Fox Farm Ocean Forest Potting Soil, Fox Farm Happy Frog Potting Soil, Fox Farm Bush Doctor Potting Soil, Fox Farm Strawberry Fields Potting Soil, Hoffman Potting Soil, Hoffman Perlite, Hoffman Vermiculite, Espoma Cactus Mix, Espoma Bonsai Mix, Espoma Orchid Mix, and Espoma African Violet Mix. We have Espoma Earthworm Castings and Charcoal for all of your plants’ needs. If you have raised beds, it’s time to turn that soil and add more of our Espoma Raised Bed mix, or Espoma Organic Moisture Raised Bed Mix.

Greenstreet carries a wide variety of summer and fall blooming bulbs, such as Caladium, Elephant Ears, Dahlias, Fragrant and Hardy Lilies, Belladonna Lilies, Montbretia, Zantedeschia, Gladiolus, and Freesias. In addition, we have late Summer/early Fall harvesting root stock vegetables like garlic, rhubarb, Dutch shallots, Dutch onions, seed potatoes, and asparagus.  It’s time also to plant your cool weather crops like lettuce, kale, arugula, peas, beets, collards, cabbage, broccoli, Brussel sprouts, and spinach which are less susceptible to frost damage.  Greenstreet has many of these seedlings available right now. After the danger of frost has passed, we will stock summer harvested vegetables like tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, peppers, and many more.

Early Springtime is also a great time to add new trees to your landscape.  Greenstreet has an assortment of varieties of fruit bearing trees like Peach, Apple, Cherry, and Pear in stock now in dwarf, semi-dwarf, and standard sizes. Consider adding a gorgeous Yoshino or Kwanzan Cherry tree to your yard. We also have white Kousa Dogwood trees as well as Pink Dogwood varieties.  Add a Thundercloud Plum, Rising Sun or Flame Thrower Redbud to your landscape and you will not regret it!  We have a few different Magnolia varieties like Southern, Lois, and Genie Magnolias to add a striking specimen tree to your outdoor space. Plant a October Red Glory Maple tree now and enjoy it’s beautiful color in the Fall.

Once you have everything you want planted or transplanted, it will be time to add new mulch to help retain moisture and keep weeds at bay. Greenstreet’s got your beds covered! We regularly stock Quail Ridge Double Shredded Hardwood, Quail Ridge Colorized Black or Red Mulch, Norfleet Washington Aged Hardwood Mulch Double Shredded, Norfleet Virginia Pine Bark and Fines Mulch, Norfleet Shredded Pines Mulch, Norfleet Red Cedar Mulch, Norfleet Colorized Red and Black Mulch, and Norfleet Silver Dollar Pine Bark Nuggets and Mini-nuggets.  We carry Dewitt Fabric Weed barrier as well.

For later on in the season, Greenstreet carries post-emergent herbicides such as Bonide Weed Beater Ultra, and Bonide Poison Oak and Ivy Killer. We have Bonide Captain Jacks Deadbug, Captain Jacks Neem Oil, and Captain Jacks Horticultural Oil for handling all of your plants’ pest problems.

We have a solid selection of quality gardening tools to help with pruning, dividing and transplanting your perennials, watering, or planting. We carry Corona Professional Tools. We have Dramm Professional watering tools. We have True Temper Rake and Cultivator Tools, American Choice Shovels, and Ames Rakes. It is also time to add plant supports to your gardens as needed. Greenstreet has American Garden Works Wrought Iron Plant Hooks, Kinsman Plant supports, Wood Trellis Designs Trellises and Planters, and PanaTom Tomato cages. We also have Dewitt Slow-Release Tree watering bags.

Finally, Springtime is Lawn Care Time! We recommend that you have your lawn soil tested through the University of Maryland local extension offices for professional testing. Test sooner rather than later to prevent problems down the road. Add elements to balance your soil’s pH for optimal growth as recommended. Our lawn care line of Jonathan Green products include: Grass Seed and Starter Fertilizer, Black Beauty Sun and Shade Grass Seed, Black Beauty Bare Spot Patcher Seed, Veri-green Lawn Food, and organic Corn Gluten Weed Preventer. Our Espoma lawn care products include organic Weed Preventer which prevents weeds and feeds the lawn, and Espoma Ultra-fast Lime to adjust the soil’s pH.

Spring is time to throw off those blankets of hibernation and get moving outside in your gardens and yard. Remember, today’s preparation will determine tomorrow’s success! Your success will grow at Greenstreet. Come visit us today.
