With so many of us isolated in our homes, it’s no surprise that some incredibly innovative houseplant trends emerged in 2020. And while we hope there is a lot more freedom to explore outside the borders of our humble abodes in the coming year in Maryland, the houseplant trend is undoubtedly here to stay.Â
So, we decided to do some trend forecasting to see what might be on the radar of plant owners in the year to come. Let your 2021 indoor green space inspiration commence!Â
Â
What are some trending houseplants to look out for in 2021?Â
New year, new houseplants in Maryland!
The houseplant trend has skyrocketed in recent years, and we are so excited to see what is catching the eyes of both experienced and newbie plant parents.
We did some serious data digging this year to reveal some 2020 houseplant trends and which ones we should have on our radar in 2021. Â
After scouring the last ten years of Google search data, we learned these beautiful plant babies are making their way onto shelves in homes more than ever before:
The Fishbone Cactus: Recently reclassified as a disocactus anguliger, the fishbone cactus (also sometimes known as an orchid cactus or ‘zig-zag plant’) has distinctively shaped, long flat stems that are true to its name. With its structural presence and relatively easy to care for attitude, it’s easy to see why this beautiful succulent will be one of the most popular plants of 2021. Â
Caring for your fishbone cactus won’t take too much of your time. It does best when its soil can dry out between watering, and like many houseplants, care requirements change slightly in the winter. For this particular cactus, you can actually cut watering in half.Â
The Bunny Ear Cactus: Our runner up is the bunny ear cactus. This trending houseplant gets its name because it looks an awful lot like a pair of bunny ears.Â
While the bunny ear cactus is a relatively low maintenance plant, there are a few things you should know to keep those ears from drooping. During the fall and winter months, neglect is the Bunny Ear Cactus’ best friend. It only needs to be watered lightly every three to four weeks. During the growing season, you’ll want to give it a little more consistent moisture.Â
Blue Star Fern: Coming in at a close third, the blue star fern is a truly tropical plant that thrives in higher humidity levels, making it a great choice if you’re on the hunt for the perfect plant to place in your bathroom.Â
These unique ferns enjoy moist soil pretty much all the time but aren’t the biggest fan of being left in standing water. They prefer partial, direct sunlight.
Velvet Calathea: Voted one of the most popular houseplants in the year to come, the velvet calathea originates from the rainforests of Central and South America. This means it loves humidity, warmth, and indirect sunlight. This statement plant gets its name from the tiny hairs that cover its purple stems and deep green leaves, giving it a velvety-soft feel.
It’s another excellent choice to bring some greenery to a bathroom or bedroom!Â

What are some of the most popular houseplants?Â
They might not be new on the scene, but these popular houseplants are longstanding favorites that are not going anywhere any time soon.Â
Aloe Vera: The tried, tested, true, and multi-functional aloe vera is one of the most highly-searched-for houseplants on the market. In addition to its beautiful structure, you can also use the gel inside its succulent foliage for medicinal purposes like treating sunburns.Â
Aloe thrives when watered deeply but infrequently (about every three weeks), and even less often in the winter months. Your aloe plant will do best in bright, indirect sunlight or under artificial lighting.
Money Tree: Also known as Pachira aquatica, the money tree (both the floor-sized and mini version) was a top-selling plant in 2020. The money tree is said to bring good fortune, reduce stress and anxiety, and even help relieve sleep disorders.Â
These popular plants can adapt under fluorescent lights and enjoy somewhat bright, indirect light. They like a little extra humidity (something to keep in mind during the colder months here in Maryland) but require fewer waterings in the winter.Â
