Farmers Markets, grab a bag and go to new D.C. area farmers markets

 May 6
Fresh, local produce is filling up the tables at area farmers markets. And as the fruits and vegetables are growing, so is the number of places to buy them.

In the District

Jim Coleman has added a new market in the city to his Fresh Vista Farmers Markets portfolio, at 14th and Kennedy streets NW. He’s been managing the Riverdale Park Farmers Market since 2006. Coleman said someone else had been in talks to open a market in the area of 14th Street, and he decided to step up when that person could not take it on: “It felt like it would be exciting to try a new market in a place that obviously needed one.”

The market will start with 12 vendors, selling meat, fruit, vegetables and bread. There will also be Zeke’s Coffee.

Greenstreet Gardens has been in the plant business for more than a decade. Now it’s opening a farmers market. “I think it was really a natural segue for us,” said co-owner and Vice President Stacy Greenstreet. The operation had dabbled in selling other regional products via a state-supported meat program, and Greenstreet decided there were enough customers interested in local goods to expand the operation.

The new market may help fill a void left by the closure of another one in nearby Deale. All foods at the market will come from Maryland, including meat, produce, eggs, kettle corn and baked goods, some of which will be gluten-free.
